Tying It All Together
How many times, have you walked into a friend's or neighbor's house to witness a holiday decorating disaster?  The intention was there all along...but the talent and the know-how was just not there.  I remember this house...a gorgeous tone-on-tone, professionally decorated contemporary abode, beautiful lines, spectacular artwork, majestic double staircase decorated by... single strand pine roping, speckled with (okay, I can say it) ugly 4" bright red satin poinsettias and blinding gold foil flat bows!  You get the picture.  Sometimes you just have to say it:  "I am a trained professional, don't try this at home."   And so I did.  The before and after was deserving of a magazine spread.

The secret, I believe, lies in tying it all together.  It's possible that the decorating combo above might have worked in another scenario, but not in this case.  The first thing to assess is the overall feel of the house taking into consideration the color palette.  Second, is the personality of the home owners and what they want to accomplish.  Early in my career I learned that what I like is irrelevant, but what is relevant is my know-how of providing what the customer is after in a professional way, using my expertise to make the temporary decorating experience flow with the rest of the house.  Sometimes, clients know what they want, but most often they don't.  That's why they hire a professional, and as such, they have hired us to make those decisions for them.  This is an essential concept to remember.

Home holiday decorating has become a very viable sideline of silk flower businesses, addressing the needs of those who realize that the payoff is well worth it: beautiful and done!  Some of our customers decorate upwards of 50 homes annually, often starting before Thanksgiving, offering their clientele not only their services, but new product to go along with their decorating scheme.  If you haven't, this is the perfect time to start scheduling clients and promoting your services.  Make a portfolio of decorating ideas with product sampling pictures to take along to your meetings, since it helps with visualization and to define concepts.  Have fun!  It's a great feeling to make someone else happy!
